Worth visiting - Heritage and Diving Village, Dubai (March 2010)
Dubai has a long and interesting history and the Heritage and Diving Village is an excellent place to gain an understanding about Dubai’s unique culture and history. It is located at the mouth of the famous Dubai Creek in the area known as Shindagha and has an extensive display of traditional Arabic artefacts. The village also features many shows displaying the customs and traditions of the area, with even the authentic Arab dresses being exhibited.
The Dubai Heritage and Diving Village is also well known for its unique barsati houses, which are peculiar to this area. Visitors to this area will be treated to hospitality in the true Arab style, which includes a meal in a Barsati home.
These homes have one special room that is located on the terrace. In the Barsati homes, the food that is cooked for the visitors is prepared in a special outdoor kitchen that is
attached to the house. There is also a small souk located in the Heritage village that allows visitors to purchase traditional Arab souvenirs.
The Diving village is located very close to the heritage village and is a fishing and maritime museum. Dubai’s history has many forms of traditional Arab fishing and other water based customs and this museum features artefacts and items of this trade on display here. The Diving village tour even includes a display of the traditional pearl diving activities that used to take place in this area.
