Guide to the Museums of Dubai
In complete contrast to the cosmopolitan city that tourists are confronted with today, the Dubai of yesteryears was a port of trade that dealt with items like dates and pearls. To gain an understanding of the history of Dubai, tourists should pay a visit to some of the museums and heritage sites in Dubai.
When on vacation in Dubai, do not forget to pay a visit to the Dubai Museum. The museum which is situated in the Al Fahidi fort, takes youthrough Dubai’s different stages of history. The fort was originally built to protect the city against enemy invaders and pirates in 1787, and was later converted into a museum after the UAE government realised its potential in terms of being a
good example of Middle Eastern architecture as well as serving as a museum to house the rest of Dubai’s history.
Visitors to the museum will be transported through different periods of Dubai’s history, with life-size recreations of the ancient gold souks and fishing villages without which Dubai would not be what it is today. There are galleries with an archaeological bend, exhibiting discoveries made in the Middle East as far back as the 3rd millennium BC. The museum also has a gift shop, should you decide to buy a souvenir.
A visit to Dubai’s Heritage Village is definitely an experience not to be missed. Mirroring life as it must have been a few generations into the past, a visit to the Heritage Museum will see you encounter Arabian women engrossed in their embroidery or shepherds tending their flock. If you visit around the time of Ramadan, be prepared to witness an authentic Arabian feast. Dubai’s Diving Village is also worth a visit.
Further Information: For other things to do in UAE, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is worth considering.
